Trials and Appeals

In addition to the work described in our other practice areas, most members of the firm handle trial or appellate litigation in a variety of disputes. Our lawyers represent both plaintiffs and defendants in corporate and commercial civil litigation. We have considerable experience in business disputes, real property disputes, product liability, antitrust, intellectual property, employment, professional negligence and other tort and insurance litigation. The firm represents clients at trial and appellate levels of both federal and state courts, and in proceedings before various administrative agencies. We actively participate in arbitration and mediation.

Although each case is unique, our guiding principles remain unchanged. We listen to our clients to determine their objectives. If our client's business objective can be achieved by settlement, then we seek such a resolution as early as possible. If a matter can be resolved quickly by summary disposition, we target our research and discovery efforts to that end, and, when appropriate, pursue alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Although our trial attorneys are able to employ aggressive litigation techniques and strategies when appropriate, they temper their advocacy with objective advice to their clients so that cost-effective decisions may be made with respect to settlement, litigation budgets, and alternative dispute mechanisms such as arbitration and mediation. Our goal is to inform and guide the client to a satisfactory resolution of its dispute however that may best be achieved. Over our 100-year history, we have adhered to the highest standards of ethics in dealing with clients, opposing parties and with court personnel, a practice that has enhanced our reputation to the benefit of both the firm and its clients.
